50 km southeast of Bukittinggi, this is the largest town in the tanah datar area, and a center of the ancient Minangkabau culture. Fascinating historical sites abound, among them Pagaruyung, home to ancient inscribed at Batu Basurat, literally meaning ‘Inscribed Stone’.
